Zine session at JPS:

During this session, we went to the JPS campus and looked through the Zine archives from past students. I’ve never had the opportunity to look through zines as commercial magazines have been the only thing that’s been accessible to me. We were given a wide range of zines all with different contents such as a look book/ a photography one a mental health one. Alice talked to us about the different elements that make a zine such as their purposes and contents. She also taught us how to fold a zine which was a fun and useful tip to learn for not only the submission next term but future projects. One of my favourite zines was a small little lookbook with illustrative outfits and clothing. It was so cute and fit my aesthetic really well and it inspired me to start thinking about the general aesthetic of my zine and the potential content I want to put in. It was interesting to see how different the content was for all the magazines, for example, one was just illustrations, one had no imagery or colours and just writing and some had unique concepts such as a zine hanging on a hanger like clothing. Looking at these zines I’m a bit intimated by their work and think there’s no way I’ll be able to do that but I say that at the beginning of every term and always prove myself wrong. I’m really looking forward to next term and seeing my final outcomes and just enjoying and savouring the final moments of the course.
